Hussein Rostum (Artist and Poet)
"My goal as an artist and poet is to create colourful paintings that intrigue, engage, and inspire; and to write interactive poems that reflect the imagery and sense of my paintings."
My recent paintings in British Columbia, exhibited at venues in the Fraser Valley and the Greater Vancouver area, explore impressionistic abstract motifs while retaining a grounding sense of balance and structure. I also write interactive poems that reflect the imagery and sense of my paintings, and I enjoy creating art and art show videos.
My exhibition work conjures (for me) the freedom and joy of my continuing journey in art and poetry. I believe in "art for art's sake" -- meaning that art has intrinsic value and needs no justification beyond itself. Its primary purpose is simply to be art, appreciated for its aesthetic qualities and the pleasures it brings to people.
After growing up in Egypt, I moved to Toronto, Canada, in my early twenties, received my Masters degree in Economics, and established a successful management consulting business based in Ottawa. This allowed me to travel extensively across North America and around the world, which as a consequence also led me to develop an admiration for the many unique styles of art and literature from different societies and cultures. Now as a proud BC resident with an international background, I draw artistic inspiration partly from my province’s beautiful surroundings, and partly from my travels.Â
I am currently an active member of the Chilliwack Visual Artists Association and the Fraser Valley Poets Society. I also recently joined the Vancouver Chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE). The latter is nourishing my appetite for Egyptian art and culture, while still being rooted in my Chilliwack home.
